Source: NSE Indices factsheet, 30 September 2026, the latest published. Weights move with prices every day, and the next semi-annual rebalancing takes effect in March 2027, so later factsheets will differ. For today's figures, use NSE's factsheet or the monthly portfolio of any fund that tracks the index.

The caps are reset twice a year, and prices move the weights in between

NSE rebalances the index every six months, using data to 31 January and 31 July, with four weeks' notice. At each rebalancing:

  • The three largest companies are capped at 19%, 14% and 10%. Every company below them must weigh less than the one above it.
  • A company without futures and options on NSE is capped at 4.5%, and all such companies together at 10%.

Between rebalancings, weights drift with share prices. That is why ICICI Bank sat at 14.20% and Axis Bank at 10.18% on 30 September, each just above its cap. The caps describe the index on rebalancing day, not on the day you buy it.

The caps used to be looser: one stock could be 33% of FINNIFTY and the top three 62%. A circular of 29 May 2025 limited any index that carries derivatives, other than the main benchmarks, to 20% in one company and 45% in the top three, with at least 14 companies. FINNIFTY was brought into line in a single step. The concentration fell, but five banks still hold most of the index.

One bank's bad quarter moves the whole index

If HDFC Bank's shares fall 20% on a bad result and nothing else moves, FINNIFTY falls about 3.7%. The , where HDFC Bank is 10.38%, falls about 2%.

The subtler problem is that the other 19 companies don't cancel out, because they share the same risks:

  • Interest rates move margins for every lender in the same direction at once.
  • Credit cycles turn for the whole sector together. Bad loans rarely arrive at one bank on its own.
  • Regulation applies to everyone. An RBI rule on lending or capital hits every company in the index on the same day.

Diversification works by combining things that react differently to the same event. A sector index, by design, combines things that react the same way.

You already own most of it through a Nifty 50 fund

On 30 September 2026, financial services were 37.45% of the Nifty 50. The same five banks were 29.52% of it: HDFC Bank 10.38%, ICICI Bank 9.05%, SBI 3.79%, Axis Bank 3.37% and Kotak 2.93%.

Adding FINNIFTY to a Nifty 50 fund does not add a missing sector. It doubles one you already hold, and mostly through the same five banks.

Over five years it paid three-quarters of a point a year more, for 22% more swings

In the five years to 30 September 2026, FINNIFTY returned 7.14% a year including dividends. The Nifty 50 returned 6.38%. ₹1 lakh became about ₹1,41,200 in FINNIFTY and ₹1,36,200 in the Nifty 50: ₹5,000 more over five years.

It swung more to earn that. Its five-year was 16.84% against the Nifty 50's 13.82%, about 22% higher. Over the latest year both fell, including dividends: FINNIFTY by 4.42%, the Nifty 50 by 7.09%. Which way the next five years go depends on the credit cycle, and nobody can tell you that in advance.

Who FINNIFTY is actually for

Investors with a specific view. If you have a considered opinion on Indian credit growth over several years, a sector index is a legitimate way to act on it. Know that you are also making a concentrated call on five banks.

Derivatives traders, less than before. Weekly FINNIFTY options ended on 19 November 2024, when SEBI limited each exchange to weekly options on one index. NSE kept the Nifty 50's. FINNIFTY futures and options now expire monthly. SEBI's own study found that 93% of individual F&O traders lost money between FY22 and FY24, and only 1% made more than ₹1 lakh after costs.

Not first-time investors. A Nifty 50 index fund already gives you more than a third of your money in financials. Start there.

Check before you buy any sector fund. Add up what you already hold in that sector through your broad-market funds, from their factsheets. Most people who buy a financials fund on top of a Nifty 50 fund are already more than a third in financials.

Frequently asked questions

How often is FINNIFTY rebalanced? Twice a year, with cut-off dates of 31 January and 31 July and four weeks' notice before changes take effect. NSE's methodology document has the current rules.

Can I invest in FINNIFTY directly? Not in the index itself, which is a calculation. You buy it through an index fund or ETF that tracks it, or trade its futures and options, which is a different activity with different risks.

FINNIFTY's PE is lower than the Nifty 50's. Is it cheaper? Its PE was 15.11 against the Nifty 50's 19.36 on 30 September 2026. Banks usually trade on lower multiples of profit than the wider market, because their profit depends on loans that can go bad. A lower PE is normal for the sector, not a discount. Compare it with FINNIFTY's own history, not with the Nifty 50.

Is FINNIFTY the same as Bank Nifty? No. Bank Nifty holds only banks. FINNIFTY adds lenders that are not banks, such as Bajaj Finance and Shriram Finance, plus insurers, exchanges like BSE and other financial companies. Both are dominated by the same large banks, at almost the same weights: Bank Nifty weightage compares them.

Is FINNIFTY better than the Nifty 50? It is narrower. When financials lead the market it does better, and when they lag it does worse, by more in both directions. "Better" depends on whether you have a reason to hold a concentrated sector view and can sit through the years when it is wrong.
